National Cheeseburger Day is Sept. 18, 2019

Yep, one of the most iconic food treats of Americans far and wide has its own special holiday every year on this date. The cheeseburger has been immortalized in every kind of dining establishment from fast food to fancy upper class restaurants. It was a running sketch in the early days of Saturday Night Live with the late John Belushi. Since its inception, it has been created in thousands of ways across the globe by chefs from all over the world.

The story of how the cheeseburger came about goes back to 1928. Seems a young short order cook by the name of Lionel Sternberger was a working at a small luncheonette in Pasadena, California called the Rite Spot. As the story goes he was making a hamburger for a customer but it was too well done. Rather than throw it away he decided to add a slice of cheese to it. The customer was thrilled with it, the word spread about this “new” way of having a burger, and the rest as they say, is history. So a cook’s mistake led to one of the most iconic food treats that has become part of Americana.
